As part of the Storytelling class at the final stage of this course, we had a hands-on Photo Editing session. Learning how to edit their own photographs to make visual stories more powerful and meaningful.
We, the national and international photojournalists and Pathshala teachers, posed for a group photo with Anna Kuéma, Program Manager of the World Press Photo Foundation, after her insightful presentation and discussion in two separate sessions on WPP Education and the upcoming World Press Photo Contest 2025 submission guidelines, among other topics.
I am truly delighted to have had the opportunity to conduct a class for the three days ‘Photojournalism Workshop’ conducted by Press Institute Bangladesh ( PIB ) and Bangladesh Photo Journalist’s Association ( BPJA ).
Throughout the workshop, many senior photojournalists and resourceful persons shared their knowledge and experiences, offering insightful discussions on various dimensions of photojournalism. I believe their contributions were profoundly valuable for all participants.

In the three years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, hundreds of photographers have documented the human impact of the war on the front line and in civilian areas.
Some of them have shared stories about their photos which have appeared in BBC coverage since February 2022.
“To lose your friend in an attack inside Russia, rather than defending our country in Ukraine, is very difficult,” he said. “I took this photo because of the emotional impact it had on me. It says a lot about the situation and how hard it was for them.”
দিনটি ছিল শনিবার । বিকেল নাগাদ বিশ্বসাহিত্য কেন্দ্রে পৌছে গেলাম । বিশ্বসাহিত্য কেন্দ্রের আলোর ইসকুলের কার্যক্রমের আলোকচিত্র চক্রের আয়োজনে নবম ব্যাচের শিক্ষার্থীরা ততোক্ষণে ক্লাসে উপস্থিত হয়েছেন । তাদের সাথেই আজ ফটোগ্রাফী বিষয় নিয়ে আলোচনা করবো।
আলোর ইসকুলের কর্তৃপক্ষ বাবু ভাই, সুমন ভাই, জাহাঙ্গীর এবং অন্যান্য বন্ধুদের সাথে দেখা হলো । আমরা কেন্দ্রের ছাঁদের ক্যান্টিনে বসে লুচি, ডাল শেষ করে চা পান করলাম । সবাই মিলে খানিক আড্ডা মেরে—ক্লাসে উপস্থিত হলাম ।
প্রায় তিন ঘন্টা ধরে চললো সকল শিক্ষার্থীদের সাথে আমার ম্যারাথন আলোচনা—আলোচনার বিষয় গুলো ছিল, সমসাময়িক ফটোগ্রাফী এবং পরবর্তীতে ফটোগ্রাফীর নানা বিষয়ে কাজ করা । নিজেকে ফটোগ্রাফী Industry প্রতিষ্ঠা করার মন্ত্র গুলোই বা কি ? অতঃপর . . .
একাডেমিক ক্যারিয়ার পাশাপাশি বা জব করে কি করে একজন ভালো মানের ফটোগ্রাফার হয়ে কাজ করা যায়, জাতীয় এবং আর্ন্তজাতিক ভাবে । একজন প্রফেশনাল ফটোগ্রাফার এই ফিল্ডে কি করে কাজ করেন । কি করে আর্ন্তজাতিক মানদন্ড বজায় রেখে কাজ করা যায়।
জাতীয় এবং আর্ন্তজাতিক ফটোগ্রাফী প্রতিযোগীতায় কি ধরনের ছবি পাঠাতে হয় বা বিচারকরা কোন মানদন্ডের ভিত্তিতে ছবি গুলো সিলেকশন করেন । কিংবা পুরষ্কার প্রাপ্ত ছবি গুলোই কিসের ভিত্তিতে ১ম, ২য়, ৩য় বা বিশেষ পুরষ্কার দেওয়া হয় । এসব বিষয় গুলো নিয়ে শিক্ষার্থীদের একটা ধারণা দেওয়া হলো । অতঃপর এই আলোচনার ডালপালা ছড়ালো আরও অনেক দিকে !
আসলে ফটোগ্রাফী বিষয়ক বোঝাপড়ার জায়গাটা এতো বিস্তৃত—যেন একটা বিশাল সমু্দ্র ! সমুদ্রে যেমন সাঁতার কাটার আগে আপনাকে পুকুর, নদীতে সাঁতার কাটতে হবে । তার আগে আপনাকে সাঁতার কাটা শিখতে হবে । ঠিক তেমনি ফটোগ্রাফীর জগতটাও তাই । প্রাথমিক থেকে শুরু করে ধীরে ধীরে এর গভীরে যেতে হবে । অতঃপর এই Industry প্রবেশ করতে হবে । ফটোগ্রাফী প্রযুক্তিটি যেমন সময়ের প্রয়োজনে প্রতিনিয়তই আপডেট হচ্ছে ! তাই সময়ের সাথে চলতে হলে এর আপডেট গুলোও আপনার জানা থাকা জরুরী ।
পরিশেষে বিশ্বসাহিত্য কেন্দ্র পরিচালিত আলোর ইসকুলের সকলকে এবং সকল ফটোগ্রাফী শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য আমার পক্ষ থেকে আন্তরিক ধন্যবাদ ।
The day was really scorching hot, red alert was going on across the city. When we started the discussion on ‘Journalism and Photojournalism’ at Prothom Alo office, We did not understand when the three hours passed. At the end of the discussion, the students did not want to stop asking questions. Anyway, finally we had to stop.
On the 27th of April, 2024. Our Pathshala students 2nd-year 2nd semester, Four Year bachelor of Photography ( affiliated with Dhaka University, Journalism Department ) visited the Prothom Alo office as their academic learning.
As a teacher of Pathshala, for photojournalism subject ) really thankful to all of you for your energy and friendship in learning more about Journalism specially in Press Photography and Photojournalism during our visit to Prothom Alo.
I hope they visit to Prothom Alo office and learned about Journalism and Photojournalism, which will surely enhance the Photojournalism knowledge of Pathshala students. I am grateful to everyone for your energy and friendship, such a practical field visit boosted their knowledge.

Wherever I go, I see the lives that around me, as a photojournalist. I always carries on my camera. I feel it and I love picture and words. As a visual journalist my goal is to tell the reader what was there, clearly, quickly and without mystery . . .
I am sharing my professional photography experience with Alor School ( আলোর ইশকুল ) students at Bishwo Shahitto Kendro ( বিশ্বসাহিত্য কেন্দ্র ). While sharing my photography experience with all of the students, I felt that they are really interested in learning more about photography. And I am likely to say that this interest is their main mantra to learn something.

ফটোসাংবাদিক—শফিকুল আলম Shafiqul Alam এর কাজের সাথে আমি দীর্ঘদিন পরিচিত, খুব ছোট করে যদি বলতে হয়— শফিকের কাজ বিশেষ করে বাংলাদেশের সংবাদপত্রে, নিউজ ফটোগ্রাফীর ক্ষেত্রে— অনন্য ।
দৈনিক পত্রিকায় ঠিক কোন ছবিটি ছাপা হতে পারে, বা কি ধরণের ছবি তুলতে হবে ডেইলি নিউজের জন্য, শফিক এই বিষয়ে অভিজ্ঞতা সম্পন্ন একজন Brilliant ফটোসাংবাদিক বলে আমার কাছে মনে হয় ।
সংবাদপত্রের জন্য সারাদিনে কোন Breaking News বা বড় কোন ঘটনা না ঘটলেও শফিক জানেন তার পত্রিকাটির কি চাহিদা রয়েছে । অন্যদিকে Breaking News কাভার করার সময় ঠিক কোন ছবিটা তুলতে হবে এবং সেই ছবিটির কম্পোজিশন, ভিজুয়াল ইনফরমেশনটা ( পাঠকের জন্য Massage ) কি হবে—তা সে জানেন, এখানেই শফিক অন্যদের থেকে—ব্যতিক্রম ।
কোন নিউজ ইভেন্ট কাভার করার ক্ষেত্রে ফটোসাংবাদিকতার নিউজের যে এঙ্গেল বা পয়েন্ট অব ভিউ, বা অগ্রজ্ঞান বলতে যা বুঝায়, শফিক চট করে তা বুঝে ফেলেন এবং তা তাঁর ক্যামেরায় তুলে আনেন । তাঁর কাজের সবচেয়ে উল্লেখযোগ্য দিক হলো এটি । যা আমার কাছে খুব ভালো লাগে, নিউজ ছবি নিয়ে অসমান্য তার চিন্তা শক্তি কাজ করে ।
যারা নতুন ফটোসাংবাদিকতা করছেন বা ফটোসাংবাদিকতা নিয়ে পড়াশোনা করছেন তাদেরকে বলবো— শফিকের কাজ গুলো Study করতে । এতে করে দুটি জিনিস জানা হবে, জাতীয় এবং আন্তর্জাতিক পর্যায়ে Daily News Events কাভার করার ক্ষেত্রে, কোন কোন বিষয় গুলো গুরুত্ব দিতে হবে, তা জানা হবে । এবং অভিজ্ঞতা সম্পন্ন ফটোসাংবাদিক কি করে সঠিক নিউজের ছবিটি তুলেন, তা জানা যাবে ।
শফিক প্রায় ১৮ বছর যাবত বিভিন্ন দৈনিক পত্রিকায় কাজ করে আসছেন, বর্তমান তিনি দৈনিক The Financial Express সিনিয়র ফটোসাংবাকিক হিসাবে কাজ করছেন ।
অকৃত্রিম এবং বন্ধুসুলভ এই মানুষটি আমার এই ছবিটি তুলে পাঠিয়েছন । সেদিন, ১ মার্চ, ২০২১ তারিখে বাম সংগঠন গুলো স্বরাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রনালয় ঘেরাও কর্মসুচি আমরা এক সাথে কাভার করেছিলাম ।
