April Dhaka 2011: Activists of different Islamic political parties shout on the stairs of the National Mosque of Bangladesh, “Baitul Mukarram” during a nationwide strike in Dhaka on April Dozens of people were injured and more than 100 arrested on Monday as Bangladeshi police fired rubber bullets during a strike by Islamic parties against a proposed law to give women equal property rights. Police also fired tear gas in clashes with protesters, mainly students at Islamic schools or madrassas, who brought much of the nation to a standstill by blocking roads.

A clash between pro-hartal activists and police has left a youth dead and at least 25, including five policemen, injured in the Jessore district. A key member of the opposition coalition has called a day-long countrywide shutdown on Apr 4 to protest the cabinet’s endorsement of the amended National Women Development Policy-2011. At a pre-hartal meeting at Muktangon in the city on Sunday, Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ) chairmen Mufti Fazlul Haque Amini said, “This hartal is to save Qur’an. We’ll declare non-stop hartals if we’re barred.” He also asked leaders and activists of his party and its allies—under the banner of Islamic Law Implementation Committee (ILIC)—to take to streets with Qur’an and burial sheets in hands.

BNP called the hartal to press for a number of demands, including withdrawal of cases against party chief Khaleda Zia and others leaders filed in connection with the recent clash in Munshiganj over building an airport on Arial Beel and probe into the stock market crash to bring to justice the market manipulators.

During the Hortal hour BNP leaders and activists faced obstruction by the law enforcers in enforcing the day-long shutdown in capital Dhaka and much across the country on Monday.
Vandalism and chase and counter-chase marked the countrywide dawn-to-dusk shutdown on Monday, leading to the arrest of at least 53 people. Over 50 people were reported injured in clashes across the country.
