In the three years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, hundreds of photographers have documented the human impact of the war on the front line and in civilian areas.

Some of them have shared stories about their photos which have appeared in BBC coverage since February 2022.

“To lose your friend in an attack inside Russia, rather than defending our country in Ukraine, is very difficult,” he said. “I took this photo because of the emotional impact it had on me. It says a lot about the situation and how hard it was for them.”

Commuters struggle as floods submerge city in Dhaka

Commuters wade through flooded streets of Dhaka, Bangladesh on July 26, 2017 as heavy rains submerge parts of the city. Water logging due to a low-pressure monsoon has made it difficult for vehicles to ply on roads, leading to traffic and increasing travel time for residents in the area.

Hindu Rath Yatra Festival 2017

June 25, 2017- Dhaka, Bangladesh – Bangladeshi Hindu devotees attend in the annual festival of Rath Yatra, or chariot procession, in Dhaka, Bangladesh on June 25, 2017. The Ratha Yatra involves a public procession with a chariot with deities Jagannath (Vishnu avatar), Balabhadra (his brother), Subhadra (his sister) and Sudarshana Chakra (his weapon) on a ratha, a wooden deula-shaped chariot. It attracts over a million Hindu pilgrims who join the procession each year.

Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh Protest in Dhaka

10 March 2017 Dhaka, Bangladesh ~ After Friday prayer a group of Bangladeshi Muslim Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh members shout slogan and demanded to remove the statue of Greek Goddess form Supreme Court in Dhaka city. During their protest a plain-clothes police arrest one member from the spot at National Mosque on 10 March 2017 Dhaka, Bangladesh. According to the local media, the leaders demanded to remove the Greek Goddess as soon as possible otherwise they will go for big movement across the country soon.

Spring arrive here . . . 

February 13, 2017 Dhaka, Bangladesh – Bangladeshi people celebrations the spring festival (Bashanta Utshab ) at the Dhaka University Art College compound in Dhaka, Bangladesh, 13 February 2017. The Bashanta Utshab is a local traditional festival, which marks the beginning of the spring season. Basantabaran Udjapan Committee organizes programmes to celebrate the day, as nature takes off the blanket of fog and welcomes the sunlight to the earth. Though winter in Bangladesh is brief, people here bid a quick farewell to gloomy, melancholic shroud of dust and dried leafs, and embrace Falgun with all their hearts.

03 January 2016 Dhaka, BANGLADESH ~ Shopping Market Fire in Bangladesh. I was there to coverage at the capital of Gulshan One area DNCC Market has caught a fire in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on 03 January 2017. Twenty-two fire fighters control the fire; the reason of the fire is not known yet. According to local reports, and witness said more than the fire has affected 600 shops but no casualties have yet been reported, the fire reportedly originated from a transformer blast on the south side of the market earliest on the same day. © Monirul Alam

Counter Terrorism Raid in Dhaka

24122016 ~ Members of the Bangladeshi Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) of an operation to flush out suspected Islamist extremists in a hideout in Dhaka on December 24, 2016, as a team from the counterterrorism unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police cordoned off a three-storey building in the capital.
