I am truly delighted to have had the opportunity to conduct a class for the three days ‘Photojournalism Workshop’ conducted by Press Institute Bangladesh ( PIB ) and Bangladesh Photo Journalist’s Association ( BPJA ).
Throughout the workshop, many senior photojournalists and resourceful persons shared their knowledge and experiences, offering insightful discussions on various dimensions of photojournalism. I believe their contributions were profoundly valuable for all participants.
প্রথম আলো, শুভ জন্মদিন! আজ প্রিয় পত্রিকা প্রথম আলোর, ২৭তম জন্মদিনে আন্তরিক শুভেচ্ছা, ভালোবাসা ! এই বিশেষ দিনটিতে আমার পক্ষ থেকে প্রথম আলো পরিবারের সকল সদস্যের জন্য রইল অফুরন্ত অভিনন্দন ও শুভ কামনা।
আমার স্পষ্ট মনে আছে, পাঠশালা থেকে ফটোগ্রাফির ওপর তিন বছরের কোর্স শেষ করার পরই আমার পেশাদার জীবনের শুরু। প্রথমে ‘আইস মিডিয়া’তে ফটোসাংবাদিক হিসেবে কাজ শুরু করি, এরপর যোগ দিই প্রথম আলোতে। সম্ভবত সালটা ছিল ২০০৫।
প্রথম আলোতে আমার যাত্রা শেষ হয় ২০১৭ সালে—প্রায় এক যুগ! এই দীর্ঘ পথচলায় আমি যেমন প্রথম আলোর কাছ থেকে সাংবাদিকতার পাঠ নিয়েছি, ঠিক তেমনি আমার মেধা, মনন ও অভিজ্ঞতা উজাড় করে দিয়েছি প্রতিষ্ঠানটির জন্য। প্রথম আলোতে যোগদানের পরপরই এই পত্রিকার প্রতি এক ধরনের গভীর আস্থা, শ্রদ্ধা এবং ভালোবাসা তৈরি হয়েছে, যা এখনো বিদ্যমান আছে এবং সব সময়ই থাকবে আশা রাখি।
প্রথম আলোর পুরনো সংখ্যাগুলো ঘাঁটলে আজও সেখানে আমার কাজের স্বাক্ষর খুঁজে পাওয়া যাবে। একটি মজার বিষয় হলো, প্রথম আলোতে যোগদানের মাত্র কয়েক মাসের মধ্যেই সম্পাদক মতিউর রহমান ( মতি ভাই ) আমাকে ডেপুটি চিফ ফটোসাংবাদিকের গুরুদায়িত্ব দেন। তখন আমাদের ফটোগ্রাফি বিভাগের চিফ ছিলেন জিয়া ইসলাম ( আমার পছন্দের একজন মানুষ ) যা হোক, আমি সবসময় সততা ও নিষ্ঠার সাথে আমার সেই দায়িত্ব পালনের চেষ্টা করেছি।

দীর্ঘদিন দৈনিক সংবাদপত্রে কাজ করার ফলস্বরূপ যে অসাধারণ অভিজ্ঞতা অর্জন হয়, তা জীবনের মূল্যবান সম্পদ। আমি সেই অভিজ্ঞতাকে কাজে লাগিয়েছি—যা আমাকে আজ আন্তর্জাতিক সংবাদমাধ্যমে কাজ করার সুযোগ করে দিয়েছে। এছাড়া আমি নানা প্রতিষ্ঠানে ফটোগ্রাফি এবং ফটোসাংবাদিকা বিষয়ে খন্ডকালীন শিক্ষকতা করি ।
প্রথম আলো নিয়ে আমার উপলব্ধি হলো, যেকোনো প্রতিষ্ঠানের সাফল্যের পেছনে সঠিক পরিকল্পনা, কৌশল এবং দূরদর্শী নেতৃত্ব কাজ করে। প্রথম আলোর বিশাল সাফল্যের ক্ষেত্রেও এর ব্যতিক্রম ঘটেনি। আমার কাছে মনে হয়েছে, প্রয়াত মালিক লতিফুর রহমান এবং দূরদর্শী সম্পাদক মতিউর রহমান—এই দুজনের ব্যক্তিত্বই প্রথম আলোর সাফল্যের মূল ভিত্তি । তবে এ কথাটি মনে রাখতে হবে এই ধরনের মানুষদের নিয়ে নানা আলোচনা সমালোচনা হবে বিশেষ করে আমাদের এই সমাজে।
আজকের দিনের পত্রিকাটির প্রধান শিরোনাম— ‘সত্যই সাহস’—মন ছুঁয়ে গেল। সম্পাদক মতিউর রহমান ( মতি ভাইয়ের ) সেই সুচিন্তিত লেখাটি মনোযোগ দিয়ে পড়লাম; সুন্দর বিশ্লেষণ করেছেন পত্রিকাটি নিয়ে । আমার এখনো মনে পরে মতি ভাই কমরেড মণি সিংহ এর প্রয়াণে একটা অসাধারণ লেখা লিখেছিলে, যদিও তখন আমি প্রথম আলোতে কাজ করতাম না, কিন্তু লেখাটি পড়ে আমার কাছে অসাধারণ মনে হয়েছিল।
মতি ভাইয়ের লেখাটি পড়তে গিয়ে হঠাৎ করে Apple-এর প্রয়াত কিংবদন্তী সিইও স্টিভ জোবসের বিখ্যাত স্ট্যানফোর্ড বক্তৃতার একটি অংশ মনে পড়ে গেল—তিনি বলেছিলেন, “Truth be told”।
একজন পাঠক হিসেবে প্রিয় পত্রিকাটির কাছে আমার একান্ত প্রত্যাশা: ‘সত্যই সাহস’ যেন শুধু একটি স্লোগান হয়ে না থাকে। আমি পত্রিকার প্রতিটি পাতায়, প্রতিটি প্রতিবেদনে, প্রতিটি ছবিতে, প্রতিটি ভিডিওতে, প্রতিটি মন্তব্যে এই সাহসিকতার সত্য প্রকাশ দেখতে চাই। একজন নিবেদিত পাঠক হিসেবে এই দাবিটুকু নিশ্চয়ই আমি করতে পারি।
একজন ভিজ্যুয়াল জার্নালিস্ট হিসেবে কাজ করতে গিয়ে আমি অনুভব করেছি, বর্তমান সময়ে সাংবাদিকদের মাল্টি-প্ল্যাটফর্ম সাংবাদিকতায় অবশ্যই দক্ষতা অর্জন করতে হবে। তথ্যপ্রযুক্তি দ্রুতগতিতে এগিয়ে চলেছে এবং প্রতিনিয়ত নতুন নতুন প্ল্যাটফর্ম আপডেট হচ্ছে। সাংবাদিকদের উচিত এই পরিবর্তনকে ইতিবাচকভাবে গ্রহণ করা এবং সময়ের সাথে তাল মিলিয়ে প্রয়োজনীয় দক্ষতা অর্জন করা।
এই দক্ষতা অর্জনের ক্ষেত্রে সংবাদ প্রতিষ্ঠান বা পত্রিকাগুলোর ভূমিকা অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ এবং অনস্বীকার্য বলে আমি মনে করি। প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোর সঠিক উদ্যোগই পারে সাংবাদিকদের ভবিষ্যতের জন্য প্রস্তুত করতে।
পরিশেষে, আরও একবার প্রথম আলোকে তার ২৭তম বছরে উষ্ণ অভিনন্দন জানাই। পত্রিকার সঙ্গে সংশ্লিষ্ট সকল কলাকুশলী ও শুভানুধ্যায়ীর জন্য রইল আন্তরিক শুভকামনা।
I stand with one of my favorite personalities, the renowned photographer, photo editor and educator Abir Abdullah. I must say—there is no doubt about his gentle nature and kindness.
Yesterday, I visited his solo photography exhibition ‘Troubling Rain’ at La Galerie, Alliance Française de Dhaka — where journalistic images transformed into poetic expressions on the gallery walls.
At the same time, I had the opportunity to conduct a brief interview with him, which I hope to share with my friends on social media soon. I also collected his exhibition brochure, where he explained why this project matters so deeply today.
He wrote: “Over the past two decades, I have turned my lens to the monsoon—a season celebrated in Bengali literature through countless poems and songs, praised for its beauty, rhythm, and romance. But beyond the lyrical and the romantic lies another, less documented reality: the disruptions, hardships, and quiet struggles that rain brings to everyday life.”

In the three years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, hundreds of photographers have documented the human impact of the war on the front line and in civilian areas.
Some of them have shared stories about their photos which have appeared in BBC coverage since February 2022.
“To lose your friend in an attack inside Russia, rather than defending our country in Ukraine, is very difficult,” he said. “I took this photo because of the emotional impact it had on me. It says a lot about the situation and how hard it was for them.”
পুরান ঢাকা টু মিরপুর এগারো । উদ্দেশ্য ছিল দুইটা [এক ]‘উন্মাদ’ এর আয়োজনে বাংলা কমিকস্ প্রদর্শনী ও উৎসবে যোগ দেওয়া ! [ দুই ] ঢেউ বলছিল বাবা আমার জন্মদিনে তো কোথাও আমাদের নিয়ে ঘুরতে গেলা না ! তাই সবাই মিলে একটু ঘুরে আসা !
সড়ক পথের প্রায় পনেরো কিলোমিটারের এই জার্নিতে আমাদের অভিজ্ঞতা হয়েছিল অনেক । যেমন সড়ক অবরোধ, রথ যাত্রার মিছিল দেখা, যানজট, তীব্র গরম ! এবং গন্তব্যে পৌছাতে নানা পদ্ধতির প্রয়োগ করা । কখনো পায়ে হাঁটা, কখনো রিকশা আবার কখনো সিএনজি করে অবশেষে কাঙ্খিত গন্তব্যে পৌছানো । যাহোক এটাই এখন আমাদের সহনীয়-অসহনীয় ঢাকা শহর । কারণ আমরা ঢাকাবাসী ! আমরা ঢাকায় থাকি !
ঋদ্বি—গ্যালারীতে কমিকস্ প্রদর্শনীর কমিকস্ গুলো দেখে খুব মজা পাচ্ছিলাম।হঠাৎ আমি ঢেউকে বললাম ঐ লোকটাকে চেনো ? ঐ যে চেয়ারে একা একা বসে আছেন ? উনার কাছাকাছি কিন্তু যেও না ! ঢেউ সঙ্গে সঙ্গে বলে উঠলো কেন বাবা ! উনি কি ভয়ঙ্কর লোক ! আমি বললাম না উনি হচ্ছেন ‘উন্মাদ’ ম্যাগাজিনের সম্পাদক !
ঢেউ ততোক্ষণে বুঝে গেছে আসল ব্যাপারটা ! সে দেখেছে তাদের বাসার বুক সেলফে এই উন্মাদ ম্যাগাজিন কয়েকটা কপি আছে । পরে আমি হাসতে হাসতে বললাম —হ্যাঁ মা উনি হচ্ছে গ্র্যান্ডফাদার অফ জোকস, আমাদের উন্মাদ ম্যাগাজিনের সম্পাদক আহসান হাবীব।
বাংলাদেশের একজন জনপ্রিয় কার্টুনিস্ট, রম্য সাহিত্যিক এবং কমিক লেখক । উনার কিন্তু আরো দুইজন বিখ্যাত ভাই আছেন তারা হলেন জনপ্রিয় সাহিত্যিক প্রয়াত হুমায়ূন আহমেদ এবং মুহাম্মদ জাফর ইকবাল।
আমরা প্রদশর্নী দেখা শেষ করে উন্মাদ ম্যাগাজিনের কিছু বিশেষ সংখ্যা, ষ্টিকার, কিছু কমিকসের বই কিনে, ঋদ্বি ক্যাফেতে খাওয়া দাওয়া শেষ করে মেঘ/ ঢেউ এর নানী বাসা হয়ে ফিরে এলাম নিজেদের গন্তব্যে ।

Cyclone Rimal has started to affect in the Dhaka city since this morning. It is torrential rain with stormy wind, water has accumulated somewhere on the streets. I put on a raincoat and went out on my motorcycle and to go to Drik for Bangladesh Press Photo Contest 2024 judging. I reached Drik on time. Other judges arrived, after a while our judging is started.
Here is my short observation about this Press Photo Contest as a judge: Photojournalists of Bangladesh participated in this Press Photo contest as they proved once again how powerful a single image is ! Which surpasses other branches of Press Media.
Its importance can be understood by looking at the award-winning pictures and the displayed pictures. Because they give new ideas to photojournalists, photo editors and newspaper editors and readers as well as those who involved in the news media industry.

দিনটি ছিল শনিবার । বিকেল নাগাদ বিশ্বসাহিত্য কেন্দ্রে পৌছে গেলাম । বিশ্বসাহিত্য কেন্দ্রের আলোর ইসকুলের কার্যক্রমের আলোকচিত্র চক্রের আয়োজনে নবম ব্যাচের শিক্ষার্থীরা ততোক্ষণে ক্লাসে উপস্থিত হয়েছেন । তাদের সাথেই আজ ফটোগ্রাফী বিষয় নিয়ে আলোচনা করবো।
আলোর ইসকুলের কর্তৃপক্ষ বাবু ভাই, সুমন ভাই, জাহাঙ্গীর এবং অন্যান্য বন্ধুদের সাথে দেখা হলো । আমরা কেন্দ্রের ছাঁদের ক্যান্টিনে বসে লুচি, ডাল শেষ করে চা পান করলাম । সবাই মিলে খানিক আড্ডা মেরে—ক্লাসে উপস্থিত হলাম ।
প্রায় তিন ঘন্টা ধরে চললো সকল শিক্ষার্থীদের সাথে আমার ম্যারাথন আলোচনা—আলোচনার বিষয় গুলো ছিল, সমসাময়িক ফটোগ্রাফী এবং পরবর্তীতে ফটোগ্রাফীর নানা বিষয়ে কাজ করা । নিজেকে ফটোগ্রাফী Industry প্রতিষ্ঠা করার মন্ত্র গুলোই বা কি ? অতঃপর . . .
একাডেমিক ক্যারিয়ার পাশাপাশি বা জব করে কি করে একজন ভালো মানের ফটোগ্রাফার হয়ে কাজ করা যায়, জাতীয় এবং আর্ন্তজাতিক ভাবে । একজন প্রফেশনাল ফটোগ্রাফার এই ফিল্ডে কি করে কাজ করেন । কি করে আর্ন্তজাতিক মানদন্ড বজায় রেখে কাজ করা যায়।
জাতীয় এবং আর্ন্তজাতিক ফটোগ্রাফী প্রতিযোগীতায় কি ধরনের ছবি পাঠাতে হয় বা বিচারকরা কোন মানদন্ডের ভিত্তিতে ছবি গুলো সিলেকশন করেন । কিংবা পুরষ্কার প্রাপ্ত ছবি গুলোই কিসের ভিত্তিতে ১ম, ২য়, ৩য় বা বিশেষ পুরষ্কার দেওয়া হয় । এসব বিষয় গুলো নিয়ে শিক্ষার্থীদের একটা ধারণা দেওয়া হলো । অতঃপর এই আলোচনার ডালপালা ছড়ালো আরও অনেক দিকে !
আসলে ফটোগ্রাফী বিষয়ক বোঝাপড়ার জায়গাটা এতো বিস্তৃত—যেন একটা বিশাল সমু্দ্র ! সমুদ্রে যেমন সাঁতার কাটার আগে আপনাকে পুকুর, নদীতে সাঁতার কাটতে হবে । তার আগে আপনাকে সাঁতার কাটা শিখতে হবে । ঠিক তেমনি ফটোগ্রাফীর জগতটাও তাই । প্রাথমিক থেকে শুরু করে ধীরে ধীরে এর গভীরে যেতে হবে । অতঃপর এই Industry প্রবেশ করতে হবে । ফটোগ্রাফী প্রযুক্তিটি যেমন সময়ের প্রয়োজনে প্রতিনিয়তই আপডেট হচ্ছে ! তাই সময়ের সাথে চলতে হলে এর আপডেট গুলোও আপনার জানা থাকা জরুরী ।
পরিশেষে বিশ্বসাহিত্য কেন্দ্র পরিচালিত আলোর ইসকুলের সকলকে এবং সকল ফটোগ্রাফী শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য আমার পক্ষ থেকে আন্তরিক ধন্যবাদ ।
WITNESS MY TIME ~ Nowadays it is difficult to visit all photography exhibition due to my professional works and duties. But I try to see the work of my favourite photographers work which is really inspires me from that reason still I visits a gallery and an open space photography exhibition.
“Rise of a Nation”— exhibition titled, I saw this photography exhibition of Indian notable photographer Raghu Rai, he also as a member of the prestigious Magnum Photos. Rai’s has been a notable figure in the documentation of the Liberation War of Bangladesh 1971.
A present exhibition he featuring both released and unreleased photos during his ventured into the war zone in 1971, walking tirelessly alongside freedom fighters and Indian forces on the battlefield. Rai’s remarkable image, which earned him the prestigious Padmashree award in 1971.
In 2012, Rai created the Raghu Rai Center for Photography to share over five decades of his knowledge and experience with the younger generation. As a photographer I want to say, many national and international photographers are inspired from his brilliant work.
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Faculty of Fine Art, University of Dhaka, in collaboration with the Durjoy Bangladesh Foundation (DBF), exhibition curated by artist Zihan Karim. According to Ria’s bio and press release.
The exhibition is going on in Zainul Gallery at the Faculty of Fine Arts in the University of Dhaka, will continue till 19 May 2024.
The day was really scorching hot, red alert was going on across the city. When we started the discussion on ‘Journalism and Photojournalism’ at Prothom Alo office, We did not understand when the three hours passed. At the end of the discussion, the students did not want to stop asking questions. Anyway, finally we had to stop.
On the 27th of April, 2024. Our Pathshala students 2nd-year 2nd semester, Four Year bachelor of Photography ( affiliated with Dhaka University, Journalism Department ) visited the Prothom Alo office as their academic learning.
As a teacher of Pathshala, for photojournalism subject ) really thankful to all of you for your energy and friendship in learning more about Journalism specially in Press Photography and Photojournalism during our visit to Prothom Alo.
I hope they visit to Prothom Alo office and learned about Journalism and Photojournalism, which will surely enhance the Photojournalism knowledge of Pathshala students. I am grateful to everyone for your energy and friendship, such a practical field visit boosted their knowledge.
