I loved and like to see the sculpture, It reflects culture, history and time. During our road trips to Gazipur I saw it again in Gazipur Square and taken a picture. It’s name ‘Jagroto Chowrongi’ made by artist Abdur Razzaque, it is the first post-Liberation War sculpture. It depicts a Freedom Fighter with a grenade in his right and a rifle in his left hand. The sculpture is an 18 feet high concrete piece on a 24 feet pedestal. Photo by Monirul Alam

Cop Brutality Attack on Protesters . . .

During the Bengali New Year celebrations on Apr 14, 2015 a group of men sexually assaulted some women several times at Suhrawardy Udyan’s main entrance, adjacent to the TSC area. The police are yet to arrest anyone over the molestations that triggered much protest from student groups and human rights organizations. The Bangladesh Chhatra Union BCU announced on its plans to march and besiege the DMP headquarters to protest police inaction.

Demonstrators, heading towards the Dhaka Metropolitan Police headquarters, on 10 May, 2015 were stopped at the capital’s Minto Road Police charged with batons, lobbed tear gas shells and used water cannons to drive away the protestors. At least, 10 students, injured in police action, have been taken to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital. The role of police during the incident has been criticised and protest against police attack and sexual assault.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police DMP suspended Nayek Anis for his alleged involvement in 10 May brutality on women activists who were protesting the sexual assault during Pahela Baishakh celebration. The DMP also formed a three-member probe body to investigate the incident.

Police came under heavy criticism from platforms of professionals, teachers, rights activists and left-leaning students for brutally beating protesters instead of arresting people who had sexually assaulted women during the Pahela Baishakh celebrations.

Meanwhile, the High Court yesterday ordered the inspector general of police (IGP) to report to it by 14 June on the action taken against the policemen who beat up the protesters near the Dhaka Metropolitan Police headquarters.
