A clash between pro-hartal activists and police has left a youth dead and at least 25, including five policemen, injured in the Jessore district. A key member of the opposition coalition has called a day-long countrywide shutdown on Apr 4 to protest the cabinet’s endorsement of the amended National Women Development Policy-2011. At a pre-hartal meeting at Muktangon in the city on Sunday, Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ) chairmen Mufti Fazlul Haque Amini said, “This hartal is to save Qur’an. We’ll declare non-stop hartals if we’re barred.” He also asked leaders and activists of his party and its allies—under the banner of Islamic Law Implementation Committee (ILIC)—to take to streets with Qur’an and burial sheets in hands.
